February 1964 saw the coal mine at Cornwall close and with it went the old art of contract miners. These men would work in pairs and shovel twenty to twenty five skips full of coal each shift, amounting to around thirty tons of coal.
Today, all coal mining in Tasmania is completely mechanized.
